A suprising statement no doubt but New Zealand Rugby just does not need to win the Super 14 this year either through the Canterbury Crusaders or the Wellington Hurricanes.
New Zealand Rugby needs another set back so that the cracks of the Rugby World Cup in France and ones past are not just smoothed over. The Crusaders and The Hurricanes will provide a number of the All Blacks for the Tri Nations and it would be better for New Zealand Rugby for those players turning up for matches determined to gain success. Angry at losing in the RWC, angry at losing in the Super 14. The hunger would be back and most importantly it would focus their minds on what to do when they are behind in a tight high pressure match, situations that they do not encounter often. Especially if they are Canterbury Crusaders players who frankly barely lose. The easy repsonse to the above is that any player representing the All Blacks is hungry, of course they are. But in the circumstances outlined above they would be stung and would know a little bit more about themselves when under real pressure. A loss would give them a tangible experience to draw on the next time they are losing a world cup knockout match. That experience might just be what carries them through to lifting the world cup again. |
