NSW Suburban will be looking to improve their impressive record in the Barraclough Shield when they take on Queensland Suburban at Campbelltown Showground on Saturday.
NSW Suburban regained the Shield with a 33-19 victory at Ballymore last year, with Queensland Suburban’s 2006 win their only victory since 1992. ‘Subbies’ go into the match on the back of an impressive performance earlier this year when they defeated NSW Country 19-12 at the Sydney Football Stadium, however have been unable to finalise their match day 22 due to the inclement weather in Sydney this week. “There have been a lot of closed grounds around Sydney with all this rain, so it’s been hard for the guys to get on the paddock together,” said NSW Suburban Co-coach Michael Doyle. “We’re hopeful of getting a run today or tomorrow to finalise the 22.” Doyle said a good preparation ahead of the victory over Country gave the team confidence, but that ‘Subbies’ would be taking nothing for granted this week. “The guys prepared really well for that match and in the end we got the result we were after in a hard-fought game,” said Doyle. “The Cockatoos went on to win the Australian Rugby Shield in May, so on that form line we’re looking pretty good coming into the Barraclough Shield. “That said, we were confident going into this match in 2006 and got stung. Queensland Subbies are going to be a formidable side and we’re going to have to be on our game to hold onto the trophy.” ‘Subbies’ have made five changes to the squad which took on Country, most notably the loss to injury of Waverley flyhalf Jake Havebond who has represented NSW Suburban for the last eight years. Campbelltown’s Aaron Loxley will skipper the team for the first time and will do so on his home ground. The match kicks off at Campbelltown Showground in Sydney’s south-west 2:30pm. 2008 BARRACLOUGH SHIELD NSW SUBURBAN V QUEENSLAND SUBURBAN Saturday, 7 June 2008 (Kick-off 2:30pm) Campbelltown Showground NSW SUBURBAN (squad) Backs: Kristian Berghofer (Blacktown), Dean Berkhout (Beecroft), Tim Cohen (Colleagues), Anthony Dwyer (Beecroft), Tom Kelly (Beecroft), Peter Low (Briars), Brad O’Young (St Patricks), Gene Peterson (Rouse Hill), Matthew Prowse (Colleagues), Willy Teo (Drummoyne).
