NSW Rugby Chairman Arvid Petersen says the Australian Rugby Union has made a financially responsible decision by terminating the Australian Rugby Championship.
The ARU today informed all stakeholders that although the ARC achieved many development goals its operating costs were too great to continue. “We are disappointed but fiscally this is the proper decision,” said Mr Petersen. “Although the ARC produced some wonderful results on the field, including a championship for the Central Coast Rays, NSW is exposed more than anyone with three teams,” said Mr Petersen. “Rugby-wise the tournament was a great success and it has shown the way for the future, providing we get the model right.” Mr Petersen expressed his gratitude to the players, coaching staff, committees and supporters who got behind the Rays, Rams and Fleet. “A lot of people put in a lot of effort to get these teams off the ground and we thank them for their contribution,” added Mr Petersen. “They will obviously be disappointed, some very disappointed, but they helped the game take a step in the right direction and for that they should be applauded.” NSWRU Chief Executive Officer Jim L’Estrange echoed the ARU’s call for a complete review of all professional Rugby programmes. “The ARC was the game’s first shot at a national solution to improving our depth and growing the game,” said Mr L’Estrange. “Now that we’ve seen its potential the game can confidently use 2008 as a year of review and restructuring. “We have already begun the process with Club Rugby and we look forward to working with the ARU for a nationwide solution to the structure of our great game.” |
