Happy New year to everyone today’s blog I wanted to talk about domestic rugby in Pakistan Domestically two very important tournaments were held recently the first was a Universities “universevens” LUMS “Lahore University of Management Sciences” one of the leading academic universities in Pakistan which has a fully developed rugby program and has been leading the way in promoting rugby among the universities in Pakistan organized a 7 a side tournament.Pakistan Rugby tournament
It was great to see 12 universities taking part.
The aim of this tournament was to get together national universities that have excelled in sporting activities and develop its players’ rugby skills.
The 12 teams participated Bahria University, Fort Abbas Degree College, Garrison Degree College, Government College University, Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, Islamic University Bahawalpur, LUMS, FAST Islamabad, Professional Academy College, University College Lahore, University of Management and Technology, and the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
The Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) provided referees and officiate the tournament.
LUMS the most experienced team were the winners of the Cup, by beating IUB 7-5 in a thrilling final. FAST beat LUMS Greens by 5-0 to finish third, with UMT winning the Shield final and Garrison Degree College winning the Bowl final.
In the other event The Punjab Rugby Association held a very successful rugby championship as part of the Lahore interschool and intercollegiate Games 2009 the tournament was organized by the Punjab Olympic association and this was the first time rugby was being played in Pakistan as part of a multi sport event at any level a achievement for Punjab Olympic and rugby Associations
Garrison degree collage won the collegiate championship they beat runners up Government Higher secondary School Shalimar campus it was a great and close final garrison experience showed as they also had taken part in the universities “Unisevens” where they won the Bowl competition , garrison scored early and Shalimar had quite a few chances but could not convert them the final try was scored in the dying minutes by Zakir Khan to seal the match 10-0 , in the third place play off for the collegiate was Government collage university Lahore
The schools winner was Government High School Jallo Mor who beat runners up City School Ravi campus 10-0the 3rd place in the schools event Government Model High School Model Town the man of the tournament was Wakar from GHS Jalo Mord
The tournament was held at The garrison degree model college , the school has two very lush dedicated rugby grounds where both the school and collegiate championship was held at the same time.
The success of rugby 7s in this multi sport event was appreciated by the Media, the Provincial Olympic association and the government sports Dept, the success of the national team in Sri Lanka added to the PRU case for rugby 7s to be included the Punjab Provincial Games.this has led to rugby is included in the 71st Punjab games a very prestigious multi sport event with 22 sport , the tournament will be held on 16-19 of January and will be played in Lahore. The next step is for the introduction of rugby in the National games which PRU is aggressively making a case for I hope to bring you the good news in an upcoming blog.
