The HSBC Waratahs coaching structure for 2009 has been finalised with the appointment of Matt Burke as kicking coach.

Burke is the Waratahs highest ever points scorer (1172 points) and the second highest capped player with 115 appearances between 1992 and 2004. After continuing his career at Newcastle in England until May this year, Burke has agreed to join the Waratahs as kicking coach.
 
“It’s good to be back and I’m really happy to be involved with Chris and his coaching team,” said Burke. “We’ll be working out a schedule over the next few weeks to target the sessions that I’ll be involved in and I’m looking forward to not only offering kicking advice but some tactical assistance to the outside backs in particular.”
 
Waratahs Head Coach Chris Hickey said the acquisition of Burke addresses a key element to the game. “Kicking whether it be for points, territory or tactical reasons needs to be practiced and I can’t think of many better in the field than Matt Burke,” said Hickey.
 
“Matt’s one of the greatest players ever to pull on a Waratahs jersey so he’ll command a huge amount of respect amongst the playing squad. He’s also got a great aptitude for passing on his knowledge and I think he’ll make a fine kicking coach for NSW.
 
“Matt will bring a great deal to the Waratahs both on and off the field.”

“After a thorough process it’s great to finalise the coaching team. I believe we are well equipped to begin developing our skills and strategies for the upcoming Super Rugby season.”
 
Hickey, Wisemantel and Wakeling have already joined the Waratahs, Foley will join the team when his Wallaby commitments conclude after the Spring Tour, while Burke will start in September.
