Michael 'Tank" Otieno has been appointed coach of the University of Nairobi Mean Machine.
He takes over from Benjamin Ayimba who steered the varsity lads to the knock-out Enterprise Cup final last year. A statement from Mean Machine secretary Davis Makori stated: Mr Michael Tank Otieno has officially taken over as the head coach of Mean Machine for the 2008 season. He replaces Benjamin Ayimba who after an exemplary first season ,where he managed to inspire an ailing team to the 2007 finals of the Enterprise cup, has amicably and mutually parted company with Mean Machine. The statement continues to state this was a joint decision made in light of Kenya's rising profile in the IRB Sevens circuit and the need for Ayimba to concentrate on the remaining four legs of the IRB circuit where he has had remarkable success. Otieno who is also the national 15's coach was introduced to players last Tuesday and immediately took charge of all technical matters. "It is an honour to take over the reins at Machine and will build up on what Benja has already started," the coach stated. Consideration was accorded to Otieno due to his unmatched track record as both a gifted player and technician. The new coach also doubles up as a lecturer at the University Of Nairobi. "Machine would like to express their sincere heartfelt gratitude to Ayimba who was a coach and friend to his players and wish him success in his international crusades," stated Makori. Otieno was eagerly welcomed by the players who believe that the man who steered KCB to an unprecedented sweep of the Floodlit, Enterprise Cup and the League will uphold the club which celebrated 30 years last year. |
