Canada East and Canada West have named their respective teams for the 3/4 play-off and the championship final of the North America Four tournament at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado on Saturday night.
Canada East plays the Hawks for third spot, while the West look for their third straight title - taking on the Falcons. The East squad lost 30-24 in the semi-final against Canada West, and now face the prospect of going winless for the first time in the three year old tournament if they do not do the trick against the Hawks. Tom Malin and Tyler Hawes get their first starts in the front row with Mike Pletch moving to prop from hooker to make room for Malin. "Obviously the scrum is strong part of the Hawks game, so we have moved the experience of Mike Pletch to tight-head for all the obvious reasons. He is still up there as one of the top tight-heads in the country, so we will put Tommy Malin into the front row to hook, and along with Tyler Hawes, I will hope we have a good lash at them in the front row," said East head coach Simon Blanks of his changes in the forwards. Scott Dunham and Stu Ault retain their second row spots, with Ault continuing to act as skipper. In the back row the tenacious work by Chauncey O'Toole is rewarded with a start, and he partners with Nolan Ott, and Aaron Carpenter stays in at the No. 8 spot. "Nolan Ott has been training his butt off to get ready for this chance, so I hope he will go out and do his usual good job of making big tackles," said Blanks. Brock University's Adam Schouten gets his first NA4 nod at scrum-half - and he will work with Steve Piatek, who has shown blossoming form through the course of the tournament. In the centres Tyler Wish and Derek Daypuck get the call, with a back three of Marc Cuglietta, Calgary's Thom Dutchak and Ciaran Hearn at fullback. Of the selection of Dutchak, Blanks is very excited, noting, "he tackles like a madman out there, I really think people are going to notice him." East's Scott Dunham, who along with Captain Stu Ault, is among the most veteran of the East team, and says his team knows how important a win in the tournament will be. "I think we are confident and have had good training sessions all week and fixed some of the things that weren't quite right," said the Balmy Beach second row. "I don't think there was that much to fix on this team, and we have looked at the video and picked out a few things that we will try against the Hawks, so yeah - the team knows it is a big game, but we feel good about where we are as a team." In the West the team remains largely intact from the squad the came from behind to beat the East 30-24 on Tuesday night to book their berth in the final. Hubert Buydens, Pat Riordan and Emil Christensen continue to anchor the front row, with Nolan Miles and Jeff Oudyk in the second row. The starting back row from Tuesday night returns as well with Neil Meechan, on the flanks Adam Kleeberger, and Tom McKeen, who had a blinder against the East, holding onto the No. 8 jersey. One key change is moving Phil Mack from scrum-half to fullback - to make a spot for Spencer Dalziel. Tournament points leader Matt Evans, who has 46 through three games, retains the fly-half spot and will be distributing to Ben Grant and Bryn Keys in the centres. On the wing relative unknown Sean Duke has cemented a spot in the final based on his form through the tournament. The decision to put Mack at fullback is one based on the fact that Mack is such an important player to have on the field - even out of position. Tony Medina, coach for the West, is taking his team to a third straight final, and he exuded the quiet confidence of a defending champion when talking about his selections. "I think we are going to play a twenty-two man game of rugby, because everyone selected is a very important part of this team," said Medina. As for his opponents on the night, the US Falcons, he surmises they will try and borrow from Canada East's game plan against West. "I think the Falcons will want to play like the East and slow us down," offered Medina. "I think we are fitter - and they won't slow us down and we will speed it up. Pretty simple."
