The Scarlets have announced that Gareth Jenkins will be returning to the region as Head of Regional Development and Recruitment; a newly created role focusing on the development of young talent, strengthening links with grassroots rugby and attracting world-class players.

The job will involve four key areas:
⿢ Academy development
⿢ Semi-professional development with both Llanelli RFC and Llandovery RFC
⿢ Strengthening links with clubs and community across the region from North Wales down to Llanelli
⿢ Player recruitment - Wales / world-wide

The wide-ranging role will allow Jenkins to use his vast knowledge and contacts across the region and the national game to support long-term rugby development for the world-famous Scarlets.

Jenkins has an unrivalled track record with the Scarlets spanning 20 years, with 10 years as Director of Rugby in the professional era in which he took the Scarlets to seven European quarterfinals and two semi-finals.

Chief Executive, Stuart Gallacher said: "We warmly welcome Gareth back to the Scarlets and we are very pleased that someone of his calibre and experience is taking forward our newly structured regional rugby development and player recruitment department.

"When we reviewed the rugby side of our business, it was quite clear that regional development required separate focus and leadership from that of coaching and performance. This new role is part of a strategic repositioning of our rugby business for the long-term.

"I can't think of anyone better qualified or experienced for this job. This is a massive boost to our relationship with grassroots rugby. Gareth knows this region like no other and has excellent contacts that will benefit the Scarlets and all those linked to us.
"This is another positive step forward for the Scarlets as we strengthen our rugby business for next season and move to our new stadium, Parc y Scarlets."

Gareth Jenkins will start in his new role this month (June 08).

Commenting on his new position Gareth Jenkins said: "I am delighted to be coming back to the Scarlets. This is an exciting opportunity and a vitally important role in the region; it's the second part of a big equation where regional development provides vital support to team performance.

Jenkins will be heading a team of regional and Welsh Rugby Union staff who will be challenged to deliver the short and long term aims for the region. His responsibilities will include:
⿢ Create a pathway development programme for the academy elite group
⿢ Recruitment and development of coaches for semi-professional clubs
⿢ Establishing strong regional zones and a regional development board to encourage closer links throughout the Scarlets region
⿢ Establishing a worldwide scouting programme and strengthening relationships with players' agents
